In Chronicles of Old New York: Exploring Manhattan's Landmark Neighborhoods, James Roman covers the early days of the city: from when Greenwich Village was a bucolic suburb and disease was a fact of daily life to Harlem's Prohibition-era speakeasies. It's filled with episodes from the lives of Astor, Vanderbilt and others, and includes nine historical walking tours, illustrated with detailed maps and full-color photos.
Roman will be leading a free walking tour through parts of Lower Manhattan on Saturday, 7/24 at 2pm. The tour starts at Washington Square Park and ends at McNally-Jackson Books, where he'll be signing copies of the book.
