opera for cheap

The Metropolitan Opera‘s rush tickets program offers $25 prime seats through a daily online drawing, excluding opening night and galas.

Created in 2005, Opera On Tap is a performance outlet for opera singers, similar to a rock or jazz gig at a local watering hole. Performers let their hair down, wear jeans, drink beer and try out new repertoire. Admission is usually free, with a bucket being sent around for donations. Updates on the current performance schedule here.

Carnegie Hall offers a limited number of rush tickets to Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage concerts—even for sold out shows—for only $10 on a first come, first served basis. These tickets are available for purchase on the day of the concert in person at the Box Office. In addition, obstructed sight line and/or restricted legroom seats can be had in the Balcony, Dress Circle, and Second Tier of Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage for 50% off (excludes Family Concerts and Galas).
